Evaluation of Play England

In February 2006, the Big Lottery Fund awarded £15.13 million over five years for the Play England project to provide strategic enabling and support services to local authorities applying to a new children’s play funding programme, and to establish infrastructure for the strategic growth of play provision in England.

Play England commissioned the NCB Research, Evidence and Evaluation department in 2006 to undertake a four-year evaluation of the Play England Project, which involved:

  • an annual survey of local authority play leads
  • the development of in-depth qualitative case studies
  • annual interviews with local, regional and national stakeholders
  • regular interviews with staff
  • surveys of the Play England membership
  • analysis of monitoring data.

This report provides a summary of the findings from the four years of the evaluation.
