Michael Chuter
Director of Organisational Support

Michael leads NCB’s Organisational Support directorate, which combines NCB’s core support functions of finance, HR, IT, facilities and company secretariat with NCB’s key service functions of membership, marketing, training, publishing, fundraising and business development. Combining these functions into a single directorate has enabled NCB to improve the delivery of its internal services, to better coordinate its fundraising and commercial activities and to increase the support it offers to other organisations in the children and young people’s sector.

Prior to joining NCB Michael was Head of Finance and Enterprise at the Foyer Federation, the UK’s largest network of youth housing linked to training and personal support; and at the same time was Chair of NHS Greenwich, the primary care organisation for the London Borough of Greenwich. At Foyer; in addition to his responsibilities for finance, strategy, HR, IT and governance, he was a vocal advocate for social enterprise and produced a number of residents’ showcases.

Michael brings a wealth of commercial and strategic experience to NCB, but also a passion for social change and says he employs the same pragmatic approach that he used in commerce, but now applies it in ways more suited to a social environment. Though he would readily admit this has not always been easy, he resolutely believes that the objectives of commerce and charity are nothing like as dissimilar as one might at first have thought.

Michael is a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Institute of Internal Auditors and has spent most of his working life in the retail and consumer sectors. But, after a 30 year career, which included spells at Gillette, Spillers, Hertz, Burton and Evans, in 2003 he moved into the not for profit sector.

Outside of work; Michael writes and produces an annual Christmas pantomime, performs in amateur musicals and plays squash, tennis and atrocious golf.
